The Dory Yochum Scholarship 
MentorNet to award $5000 to an outstanding woman protege in STEM     

MentorNet announced today that it will award $5000 to an outstanding woman protege in honor of its long time champion and Chair of the Board of Directors, Dory S. Yochum. 

On December 5, 2010, MentorNet was profoundly saddened to lose Dory. She worked for 32 years at AT&T Labs, rising to the position of Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer. She also served on the Board of Fraser Research and as Chief Administrative Officer of PalmSource. Dory was a leader in research and technology and an exemplar for our protégés and mentors. To honor and promote her legacy, MentorNet has launched this first annual Dory S. Yochum Scholarship.
To be eligible, a  candidate must be a woman currently pursuing any postsecondary degree in any field of science, technology, engineering or math at a partnering campus or society and a current or former protege of MentorNet.

SOLAR-Eclipse Computational Tools for Imaging Genetics

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Statistics at the University of Warwick, funded by a NIH RO1 grant, joint with University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Title: SOLAR-Eclipse Computational Tools for Imaging Genetics
Supervisors: Dr. Thomas Nichols (Warwick) and Dr. Peter Kochunov (U. Maryland Baltimore)
Funding: Tuition fees (at UK/EU level) and tax-free stipend for a 3.5 year PhD. Stipend rises annually as per the UK Research Councils minimum rate (£13,590 for 2011/11).
Start Date: October 2012
Project Description: Imaging genetics is an exciting merger of neuroscience and genomics, looking to discover and understand the genetic variation in brain imaging phenotypes. The over-all goal of this project is to create a new imaging genetic tool, that will allow the use of imaging data with classical genetic and epigenetic epidemiological analyses such as heritability, pleiotropy, quantitative trait loci (QTL) and genome-wide association (GWAS), gene expression, and methylation analyses. The project will extend the the widely used genetics SOLAR software, creating the "SOLAR-Eclipse" toolkit.
This studentship specifically concerns the development of inference methods that account for the genomic and spatial structure in the data analyzed. In particular, multiple testing methods that account for both the spatial nature of the signal and correlated noise structure. The methods must work with both independent samples (unrelated individuals) and pedigrees (related subjects). The methods developed will be ultimately be released as a standalone application and integrated into the existing neuroscience eScience networks. Such an integrate analysis package will greatly enhance and speed up the search for genes that influence brain's neuroanatomic and functional traits and provide comprehensive tools to illustrate pathways from genes to brain structure/function. It is expected that a combination of permutation and random field theory based methods will be developed to meet these goals. Grant pending final approval; studentship conditional on grant award.

Purdue University’s College of Engineering and College of Science have identified imaging as a major thrust for cross-disciplinary research and education and are accepting applications for tenured and tenure track faculty (Assistant and Associate Professor) in this area. Imaging research has become the key to progress in fields such as medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, earth and atmospheric science; and the resulting technologies are addressing major human needs in healthcare, medicine, security, manufacturing, and communication. Purdue University has embarked on a new “integrated-imaging” initiative to exploit the synergy between science and engineering, algorithms and devices, sensors and applications. This initiative will build on strengths and leverage the imaging capabilities of both Purdue Colleges and Purdue’s Discovery and Research Parks.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Science or a related field.  They should have a distinguished academic record, exceptional potential for world-class research, and a commitment to teach in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Specific research fields of interest in the integrated-imaging cluster include, but are not limited to electron and light microscopy, whole body imaging, image processing, inverse methods, multimodal imaging, hyperspectral imaging, and sensor systems. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in topics related to integrated imaging, conduct research in their field of expertise, publish and present research findings, participate in professional activities, and advise graduate student research.  The primary faculty appointment will be in a school of the College of Engineering or a department of the College of Science, and will depend on the candidate’s qualifications.

HHMI Investigator National Competition



The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) seeks to appoint up to 30 new biomedical researchers through a national open competition. The initiative represents an investment of approximately $200 million in basic biomedical research by the Institute.

This HHMI investigator competition is open to scientists at more than 200 eligible institutions who study significant biological problems in all of the biomedical disciplines, as well as in adjacent fields such as biophysics, chemical biology, biomedical engineering, and computational biology. Plant scientists, experimental evolutionary biologists, and patient-oriented researchers are welcome to apply. Those selected in this competition will receive a five-year appointment to HHMI, which is renewable pending favorable scientific review.

This post is part of a strategic plan to develop a research portfolio
within the newly formed HYMS Centre for Neuroscience, one of five
interactive and dynamic centres within the Medical School. The
successful candidate for this post will have an outstanding research
record demonstrating their commitment to research, innovative
leadership, teaching and learning. He or she will be expected to exploit
the considerable opportunities for collaborative research with
colleagues and existing research teams in the Universities of Hull and York.

The individual will have a specific remit to complement and enhance the
research activities of the Wellcome-Wolfson Centre for Hyperpolarisation
in MRI. The Centre is a new facility being developed within the
University of York. It has been formed to take a major advance in
molecular imaging from the bench to the bedside. The facility will house
state-of-the-art preclinical scanning facilities, NMR, DNP and extensive
synthetic and analytical chemistry capabilities, that support the
development of the use of nuclear spin hyperpolarisation in a wide range
of biomolecules, models of disease processes and eventually, in clinical
practice.

Candidates with expertise in the study of molecular or imaging
neuroscience are particularly encouraged to apply, although any research
programme that extends our current strengths of neuroscience, imaging
and chemistry would be considered. In addition to the development of a
research programme, the post holders will contribute to the teaching of
neuroscience and imaging science to undergraduate students studying
medicine and biomedical science.

Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Stanford University Functional Imaging in Neuropsychiatric Disorders (FIND) Lab

Stanford FIND Lab (http://findlab.stanford.edu), under the direction of Michael Greicius, is seeking to hire a postdoctoral fellow for a minimum two-year position. The fellowship will focus on (1) developing a deeper understanding of the genetic basis of functional brain networks in humans and (2) developing brain network imaging measures for the study of neuropsychiatric disorders. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Greicius in developing novel approaches to the analysis of functional brain networks through the study of several datasets including the Allen Institute Human Brain Atlas (http://human.brain-map.org), the ADNI dataset (http://adni.loni.ucla.edu), and several FIND Lab datasets. The ideal candidate will have a strong methods background in imaging genetics or related fields (neurogenetics, imaging, computational neuroscience) coupled with excellent writing skills. Extensive programming experience and/or expertise in classification algorithms would constitute additional advantages and could compensate for less experience in imaging genetics. Research Fellow on Imaging Neurodegeneration
SBIC Singapore

Several postdoc positions are available in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Group, Singapore Bioimaging Consortium (SBIC) in Singapore. The research focus of the group is on the development of MRI methods and imaging biomarkers for detection of neurodegeneration and regeneration in rodent models. One project is to study the structural and functional connectivity in rat/mouse models of axonal degeneration using techniques such as DTI, magnetization transfer, resting-state fMRI, etc. The other project is to develop functional imaging, including BOLD/CBV fMRI, perfusion, manganese enhanced MRI, CEST and PET, to understand how metabolic disorders such as diabetes exacerbate neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. We have very active interdisciplinary research teams consisting of people from engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and neuroscience backgrounds. We also have extensive collaboration with major pharmaceutical companies to develop new methods for evaluating drug effects in the brain.

The successful candidate will have chance to work at the Clinical Imaging Research Center to translate the methods into clinical applications. The center currently hosts a Siemens 3T TIM Trio system and is expanding to include more imaging modalities and higher field MRI.

Institute and Resources:

SBIC is a national research institute dedicating on advancing pre-clinical imaging and its translation to clinical applications. SBIC is composed of four major labs studying from animal models, imaging probe design, imaging techniques, to data processing. The lab currently hosts a Varian 9.4T MRI, a Bruker 7T ClinScan MRI, a Bruker 400MHz NMR, a NanoSPECT/CT, a Siemens microPET/CT, and a hyperpolarizer (Hypersense). Another 9.4T MRI and a 600MHz NMR microimager will be installed in 2012. Other facilities include a chemistry lab for imaging probe development, a molecular biology lab for developing transgenic animal models, and the SBIC-Nikon imaging center, which hosts all the advanced live cell optical imaging systems by Nikon. We also have access to animal behavior and radiochemistry facilities.

Qualifications:

We welcome highly-motivated people who want to explore new ideas and multidisciplinary researches to apply. Preferred background includes, but not limited to, neuroscience, physics, and engineering. Prior experience with in vivo MRI/NMR, programming language (C or Matlab), image processing and rodent imaging is preferred.

Research Fellow on Functional Neuroimaging

Postdoc positions are available in the Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) in Singapore. CIRC is a national research institute jointly funded by the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC, A*STAR) and the National University of Singapore dedicated on advancing imaging techniques for clinical applications.

The research focus is on the development of quantitative arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI and fMRI methods to evaluate the disease progress and drug effects. One project is to detect functional connectivity and its correlation with structural connectivity and perfusion in brain development, stroke and dementia. Another project is to study the pharmacological activation and modulation of the brain function. The results will be correlated or validated by other imaging modality like PET. We have active collaboration with clinician in the National University Hospital, KK Children and Women Hospital and pharmaceutical companies. The postdoc will also have close interaction with scientists working in pre-clinical imaging at the Singapore Bioimaging Consortium to translate knowledge/methods between bench and bedside.

Facility and Equipment:

The Clinical Imaging Research Centre currently hosts a Siemens 3T TIM Trio system and is expanding to incorporate a cyclotron, radiochemistry, PET/CT, MRI-PET, and another high field MRI in 2011 with the opening of the new CIRC building.

Qualifications:

We welcome highly-motivated people who want to explore new ideas and multidisciplinary researches to apply. Preferred Ph.D. background includes, but not limited to, physics, computer science, neuroscience and engineering. Prior experience with programming language (C or Matlab) and/or MRI are required. Experience with sequence programming (especially IDEA) is preferable.

The position will start with a 3-year contract and can be renewed depending on performance. The salary is competitive based on experience.

TRIUMPH at MDACC or UT Medical School 

TRIUMPH (Translational Research in Multi-Disciplinary Program) Post-docs  is a new post-doctoral program ( http://www.mdanderson.org/prof_education/triumph) that will provide training in clinical and translational research.  The immediate goal of this program is to recruit talented, productive, well trained PhDs and train them through didactic course work as well as clinical rotations and a unique mentorship to pursue clinical and/or translational research.  A long term goal of this program is to produce scientists who can be paired with suitable physician scientists to co-PI a research laboratory.  This is a 3 year training program where  the post-docs will take a series of didactic clinical course work offered at either Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), MDACC or UT Medical School, participate in 5 different clinical rotations, while pursuing research in a translational research laboratory.   The expectation for the post-docs is that by the end of their 3 year training, they will have become fluent in the understanding of intricacies of translational research and have published in high tier journals. This program will also award a certificate from the University of Texas, GSBS.  The eligibility requirements include the following 1) Ph.D. from a top US graduate school programs in any of the life sciences, 2) high tier publications and 3) dedication to pursue cancer research.

2 POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS, INTERPERSONAL DECISION NEUROSCIENCE, VIRGINIA TECH CARILION RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Laboratory for Interpersonal Decision Neuroscience (PI: Brooks King-Casas) is currently accepting applications for two postdoctoral fellows. The laboratory investigates behavioral and neural computations underlying normative and pathological social behavior using methods of behavioral economics, social psychology, and decision neuroscience.  Current projects focus on social reward learning, individual differences in social behavior, as well as pharmacological influences on social choice.

The laboratory is part of the newly established Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (http://www.vtc.vt.edu/research/faculty/brooks-king-casas.html), and is affiliated with the Virginia Tech Department of Psychology, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, as well as the Salem VA Medical Center and Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center.  The VTCRI provides full access to outstanding computing and neuroimaging infrastructure, including three research-dedicated Siemens 3T Trio scanners. In addition, the laboratory is currently collaborating with clinical research teams focused on pathological social behavior associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, mild traumatic brain injury, addiction, and personality disorders. The VTCRI is located in historic Roanoke, VA, and enjoys many outdoor opportunities along the Blue Ridge Parkway and southern Appalachian Mountains.

Successful candidates will have broad interests in interdisciplinary work in social behavior, and demonstrated expertise and creativity in one or more of the following fields: cognitive or computational neuroscience, bioengineering, behavioral economics, affective or social neuroscience, and experimental psychopathology.

SINAPSE is a consortium of six Scottish universities; Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews, and Stirling. It has been established with funding from the Scottish Funding Council, the Chief Scientific Office and the six Universities.

The main research focus is on imaging the brain, with additional interests in oncology and cardiovascular imaging. The technology focus is primarily on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and electrophysiology (EEG). The network provides funding that has increased the number of key research staff and students within Scotland and it allows the sharing of skills and education via e-learning, seminars and other key events.

ECTRIMS Research Fellowship Exchange Programme

ECTRIMS is pleased to announce its Research Fellowship Exchange Programme competition for the coming year.

The fellowship is offered to young European postdoctoral neuroscientists (MD, PhD, ScD or equivalent) to facilitate their conduct of and training in basic, clinical or applied research related to MS in European laboratories or clinics. The goal is to maximize exchange of information and help grow the pool of well-trained scientists focused on MS.

ECTRIMS will support up to two fellowships annually, each with duration of 1 or 2 years, with an annual stipend of up to €40,000 - €50,000, depending on the candidate’s degree. Fellows are expected to identify a European research training environment and mentor prior to application and to devote full-time to research and research training during their fellowship period (up to 10% time and effort can be spent on teaching and/or clinical care).

The Hellman Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy
AAAS Hellman Fellowship

The Hellman Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy is intended for early-career professionals with training in science or engineering who are interested in transitioning to a career in public policy and administration. While in residence, the Hellman Fellows work with senior scientists and policy experts on critical national and international policy issues related to science, engineering, and technology.

Hellman Fellows work on one or more of the projects under the Academy’s Initiative for Science, Engineering, and Technology (see below). The mission of the Initiative is to examine, in broad terms, how the world of science and technology is evolving, how to help the public understand these changes, and how society can better adapt. The Initiative brings together scientists and public policy experts in a neutral setting, outside of the constraints of the political process.

MEET THE HELLMAN FELLOWS

The overall objectives of the Hellman Fellowship Program are as follows:

To provide a setting and resources for an early-career professional to develop expertise on issues of science, engineering and technology policy;

Initiative for Science, Engineering, and Technology Projects:

Alternative Models for the Federal Funding of Science and Their Potential to Nurture the Next Generation of Scientists. This study group examines current funding policies, mechanisms, and processes, and strategies for maximizing the impact of science funding. The study considers, for example, the effects of boom and bust funding cycles, the proper balance of capacity-building versus merit in funding considerations, the proportion of funds set aside for high-risk versus incremental research, and whether the current system of distributing funds is effective in supporting and retaining early-career scientists.
Scientists’ Understanding of the Public. Public attitudes about science and technology are complex, informed by a variety of sources, anchored by ethical considerations, religious beliefs, and cultural norms and values. In certain fields—for example, nuclear research, genetic engineering, research on dangerous pathogens, and nanotechnology—scientific progress and public policy concerns may come into conflict. The capacity of scientists to gain adequate funding for their work and to provide sound advice to policy makers depends crucially on their understanding of the social implications and likely public responses to their research. The project convenes scientists to discuss means of addressing this problem.
Science and the Liberal Arts Curriculum. The Academy is undertaking a study to examine the role of science education in the liberal arts curriculum. More than two-thirds of enrolled students at colleges and universities do not major in the natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics. For these students, the science courses they take in college represent their last formal science education. The primary objectives of the study are to: 1) examine philosophies behind science requirements for nonscientists in the liberal arts curriculum, 2) determine how non-science majors fulfill their science requirements, and 3) disseminate findings to enrich discussions of curriculum reform at higher education institutions.
Global Nuclear Future. The objective of the project is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of ways in which present trends—toward more widely distributed nuclear power, more nuclear weapons, more nuclear-weapon-states, and less arms control and international regulation of the world’s nuclear affairs—can be deflected to reduce the likelihood of conflict involving fissile materials. The project is addressing issues such as managing the nuclear fuel cycle, improving nuclear safety and security, US nuclear weapons policy, and challenges of disarmament.
Securing the Internet as Public Space. This study examines the social, political, economic, and legal bases of Internet security. The fundamental social building blocks of Internet communication—i.e., trust, power and control, and identity—are mediated by the technical protocols that underlie the Internet’s basic operation. By bringing together perspectives on both the social and technical requirements for Internet security, the project will offer recommendations for effective policies and design choices.

NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Biomedical Scholars Program

Dear Colleague,

We would like to bring to your attention to the NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Biomedical Scholars Program, an interdisciplinary, accelerated training program with some innovative features that may appeal to your top students. Since 2001, scientists at NIH have collaborated with colleagues in Oxford and Cambridge to create a partnership PhD training program spanning the full breadth of research in these institutions. Every student admitted to the program is fully funded for the length of training.

When compared with traditional U.S. PhD programs, the NIH-Oxford-Cambridge partnership is designed to significantly reduce the time it takes to earn the doctoral degree. Our partnership students generally earn their degrees in four years, and graduates are easily obtaining excellent post-doc positions, faculty appointments, and positions with biotech companies, to name a few of the opportunities awaiting these highly qualified individuals.

As we work to recruit the Class of 2010, we will be searching for highly self-directed students with significant research experience who are ready to focus on a particular dimension of biomedical research in their chosen fields of study. Each year, we receive applications from the nation’s top science students. Additionally, the NIH has cultivated agreements with the Rhodes Trust, the Marshall Commission, and the Churchill and Gates Cambridge scholarships, enabling these talented scholars to extend their master’s degree programs into a PhD with a U.S. lab component. The program is also compatible with the NIH MD/PhD Partnership Training Program, which offers funding for combined M.D./Ph.D. training in collaboration with over twenty U.S. medical schools participating in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). We have admitted numerous HHMI Scholars into the M.D./Ph.D. Program via the program’s Track 2 admissions pathway. We require that Scholars spend two years at the NIH and two years in the UK, working in the labs of their chosen mentors. They earn the doctoral degree from whichever UK institution they select for their doctoral work.

Dear Prospective Student,

I am writing to tell you about a groundbreaking biomedical research doctoral program—the National Institutes of Health-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program. This innovative program grew from the realization that the next generation of research scientists will increasingly need to adopt interdisciplinary approaches as they strive to produce high impact research outcomes whether basic or clinical.

This is an accelerated program, and students typically receive a doctoral degree in approximately four years. There is no standard curriculum or required coursework. Rather, each student pursues an individualized course of study in which thesis work is initiated at the beginning of the first year. The thesis project is carried out as a collaboration between two labs, with half the research undertaken at NIH and half at one of the UK universities and each student being mentored by a senior scientist at each location. The program takes advantage of the superb resources and training environments at Oxford, Cambridge, and the NIH, the world’s largest biomedical research facility, the main campus of which is located in Bethesda, Maryland where a diverse community of scientists conduct their research in over 1000 laboratories and the world’s largest clinical research center conducts more than 1000 clinical research protocols.

>From its first class that matriculated in 2001, NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars have achieved at the highest levels of biomedical research, publishing first-author papers in journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and The Journal of Experimental Medicine. Graduates have gone on to do post-doctoral training in top academic institutions and industry labs, and a few have gone directly to faculty positions.

All students are fully funded by the NIH for the duration of their doctoral work at both research sites and receive a stipend, health insurance, and travel assistance. Through the NIH M.D./Ph.D Partnership Training Program, we also offer funding for combined M.D./Ph.D. training in collaboration with over twenty U.S. medical schools participating in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Magnetic Resonance in Translational Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organization with nationally leading HEFCE RAE ratings. In partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, dedicated to research that extends from epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology, through drug discovery and development, to cancer diagnosis and patient treatment. This makes us uniquely placed to work towards our vision that people may live their lives free from the fear of cancer as a life threatening disease.

The Cancer Research UK and EPSRC Centre for Cancer Imaging focuses on translating preclinical applications of magnetic resonance and other imaging techniques to clinical tools for detection, diagnosis and assessment of cancer and combines expertise from scientists and clinicians based at both the Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Both posts are concerned with developing our programme in 3 areas: identifying MR biomarkers of cancer response to novel therapeutics, developing applications of hyperpolarization in cancer, and developing novel imaging probes and approaches to recognize and report on cellular processes important in cancer. There are excellent opportunities to collaborate with other Sections in the Institute, including the CR-UK Centre for Cancer Therapeutics.

Team Leader

As a Team Leader you will take responsibility for developing aspects of our Cancer Research UK funded programme, and will be expected to develop and lead new research in the areas outlined above. The candidate will have a strong record and post doctoral experience in biochemistry and in MR techniques, with their application to cellular and preclinical models. Team leaders are expected to win substantial competitive grants, publish extensively, supervise PhD students and contribute to all areas of the Section’s academic function.

Postdoctoral Position in MRI/MRS Imaging Research

A postdoctoral position is immediately available (up to three years) at the MR Research Laboratory in the Department of Radiology, University of Missouri. Successful candidate is expected to join an ongoing MRI/MRS molecular imaging project for cancer research, with a focus on the development of MRI contrast agents or MR imaging and spectroscopy techniques. The laboratory is located within the H. S. Truman Memorial VA Hospital Biomolecular Imaging Center and the MU Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Institute. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with basic science researchers and clinicians. Facilities include a state-of-the-art 7T MRI, a Micro-PET, a combined Micro-SPECT/CT and a Xenogen IVIS 200 optical imaging scanner. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline, such as physics, chemistry, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or biochemistry. A strong MRI, NMR or molecular imaging background is preferred.
