Hull York Medical School - Chair in Neuroscience

This post is part of a strategic plan to develop a research portfolio
within the newly formed HYMS Centre for Neuroscience, one of five
interactive and dynamic centres within the Medical School. The
successful candidate for this post will have an outstanding research
record demonstrating their commitment to research, innovative
leadership, teaching and learning. He or she will be expected to exploit
the considerable opportunities for collaborative research with
colleagues and existing research teams in the Universities of Hull and York.

The individual will have a specific remit to complement and enhance the
research activities of the Wellcome-Wolfson Centre for Hyperpolarisation
in MRI. The Centre is a new facility being developed within the
University of York. It has been formed to take a major advance in
molecular imaging from the bench to the bedside. The facility will house
state-of-the-art preclinical scanning facilities, NMR, DNP and extensive
synthetic and analytical chemistry capabilities, that support the
development of the use of nuclear spin hyperpolarisation in a wide range
of biomolecules, models of disease processes and eventually, in clinical
practice.

Candidates with expertise in the study of molecular or imaging
neuroscience are particularly encouraged to apply, although any research
programme that extends our current strengths of neuroscience, imaging
and chemistry would be considered. In addition to the development of a
research programme, the post holders will contribute to the teaching of
neuroscience and imaging science to undergraduate students studying
medicine and biomedical science.

2010 World Molecular Imaging Congress
September 8-11, 2010 Kyoto, Japan at the International Conference Center

Plan to join us for WMIC 2010, which will be held September 8-11, 2010 in Kyoto, Japan. We will be meeting at the beautiful International Conference Center, which has been home to many conferences of global significance.

Like WMIC 2009, this year's program will be constructed primarily on the strength of submitted abstracts, and the Program Committee will be integrating many of these abstracts into special sessions that bring attendees from different disciplines together for a comprehensive examination of the role of molecular imaging in particular biomedical problems.

We are proud to announce our Keynote Speaker for the 2010 World Molecular Imaging Congress will be:


Shizuo Akira, M.D., Ph.D.

Shizuo Akira, M.D., Ph.D., (born January 27, 1953 in Higashiosaka) is a distinguished and highly cited professor at the Department of Host Defense, Osaka University, Japan. He has made ground-breaking discoveries in the field of immunology, especially in the area of innate host defense mechanisms.

Besides being one of the world’s most-cited scientists in 2006 and 2007, Dr. Akira was recognized as the scientist who had published the greatest number of “Hot Papers” over the preceding two years. He is the recipient of several international awards, including the Robert Koch Prize and the William B. Coley Award.

Among his greatest discoveries is the demonstration, through the ablation of toll-like receptor (TLR) genes, that TLRs recognize a discrete collection of molecules of microbial origin, and later the RNA helicases, RIG-I (retinoic-acid-inducible protein I) and MDA5 (melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5). All molecules belong to the pattern recognition receptors, which detect intruding pathogens and initiate anti-microbial responses in the host.

MOLECULAR IMAGING & ANALYSIS WORKSHOP
The potential that Molecular Imaging has on drug development and healthcare outcomes is well recognized.
The workshop will explore:
  • The multiple modalities available in preclinical and
    clinical arenas
  • Addressing the future of bioimaging as well as imaging biomarkers
  • The translational challenges across therapeutic areas
  • The differences and issues with Imaging identified across the continuum from research to clinical
  • The technologies available and in design that will help manage the mounds of data that must be converted to solid, understandable information 

KEYNOTE
Dr. Jeffrey L. Evelhoch is vice
president, Early Stage Development and head, Imaging at Merck Research Laboratories (MRL).  In this role Jeff, provides leadership and coordination for the use of Preclinical and Clinical Imaging resources for all MRL franchises and functions.  He ensures that imaging biomarkers are used optimally in the Target through IIB space and in late stage development to help advance Merck's compounds through to registration.  Dr. Evelhoch joined Merck in 2008, after four years at Amgen as executive director, Medical Sciences and head, Imaging Sciences.  He also worked at Pfizer Global Research & Development and Pharmacia Corporation and was on the faculty of Wayne State University School of Medicine for 18 years, where he was a professor of Internal Medicine, Radiology and Cancer Biology.  Dr. Evelhoch was named a Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) in 2003.  He is actively involved in the joint efforts of professional organizations, industry groups and federal agencies to further the development and use of quantitative imaging, including The Biomarker Consortium, the Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance and the ISMRM Ad Hoc Committee on Standards for Quantitative Magnetic Resonance.  Dr. Evelhoch has a B.S. in chemistry from West Chester University and received his Ph.D. and M.S. in analytical chemistry from the University of California at Riverside.  He was also a postdoctoral fellow at Washington University in St. Louis. Throughout his career, he has actively published and served on National Institutes of Health review committees; he is currently a member of the National Cancer Institute's Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) Special Emphasis Panel.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity, PhD/or MD, Molecular Imaging

UCLA SOMI

The UCLA Scholars in Oncologic Molecular Imaging (SOMI) Program is a unique postdoctoral training program for biological researchers and physicians who desire to integrate molecular imaging and cancer research. Molecular imaging provides powerful and sensitive tools to observe and measure the molecules, molecular processes, and events that distinguish malignant from normal tissues. Oncologic molecular imaging combines the disciplines of cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, physics, biomathematics and bioinformatics, pharmacology, imaging sciences, and clinical medicine to advance cancer research, diagnosis, and management.

Postdoctoral fellows, with backgrounds from across the basic sciences and medicine, will participate in an integrated, cross-disciplinary training program under the mentorship of a diverse group of basic science and clinical faculty members representing 7 departments and 6 divisions in the David Geffen School of Medicine, the College of Letters and Sciences, and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The centerpiece of the program is the opportunity to conduct innovative molecular imaging research co-mentored by two faculty members from complementary disciplines. Fellows also engage in specialized coursework, seminars, and a clinical tutorial program. Graduates of SOMI will be uniquely trained to lead research programs to study cancer in an organismal context with state-of-the-art technologies.

Support is provided for salary, supplies and travel, for up to three years. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and must be either a US citizen or permanent resident. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

Imaging 2020 VI: Imaging Biopathways
September 13-17, 2009

Future medical therapies will increasingly focus on interrupting and redirecting pathologic biopathways at the genetic and cellular level. Imaging – especially molecular imaging - will play an indispensible role in the understanding of biopathways, the creation of biospecific interventions, and the monitoring and control of new, highly potent interventions.

Future imaging will require significantly greater sensitivity, specificity and quantitative robustness than exists today. The most significant evolution and greatest challenge will be increasing the specificity. To fully integrate imaging into therapeutics and diagnosis, imaging will need to be applicable to screening and interrogating therapeutically useful biopathways. Sessions have been designed around these themes. Discussions will address future advances in engineering and imaging modalities from NIR to X ray, microscopic in vivo imaging, fundamental advances in important biopathways (angiogenesis, metastasis, invasion and resistance, neurodegeneration, et al.), and the future roles of chemistry in imaging.

Key to meeting the challenges inherent in a complex future is open and effective communication among basic and clinical researchers from a wide spectrum of relevant disciplines. The goal of Imaging in 2020 is to catalyze this communication by laying the technical foundation for it, and by providing a format that is intentionally less structured than the traditional scientific meeting, allowing for extensive, meaningful interactions in a casual, comfortable environment. We hope to foster the development of enduring associations that will lead to innovative solutions and applications.

Imaging in 2020 VI will be held at the Jackson Lake Lodge in
Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Its beautiful location in Grand Teton National Forest is easily accessible from Jackson Airport. Breathtaking views of the Grand Tetons provide a colorful backdrop to the meeting. Participants will have the opportunity during the unscheduled afternoons to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, boating, horseback riding, or just relaxing in a truly spectacular natural setting.

2009 World Molecular Imaging Congress

September 23-26, 2009 Montreal, Canada

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the upcoming 2009 World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC). Organizers from the Academy of Molecular Imaging (AMI), the Society for Molecular Imaging (SMI), the European Society for Molecular Imaging (ESMI), and the Federation of Asian Societies for Molecular Imaging (FASMI) are working together, with input from a scientifically diverse, international program committee, to develop a scientific program which integrates developments in imaging technologies and molecular imaging agents with applications for drug development, basic science investigations, and clinical translation.

The WMIC 2009 program will be constructed primarily on the strength of submitted abstracts. Continuing in the style of last year’s meeting, the Program committee will be integrating many of these abstracts into special sessions that bring attendees from different disciplines together for a comprehensive examination of the role of molecular imaging in particular biomedical problems.

One-Stop Molecular Imaging Educational Technology Showcase

Industry exhibits will include the latest advances in pre-clinical and clinical imaging applications to create a "one-stop" molecular imaging educational technology showcase. The WMIC will bring together technically distinct and separate research communities that have a shared vision in the molecular imaging sciences. Building on the success of the first World Molecular Imaging Congress in Nice, we expect the attendance for the 2009 WMIC to exceed 2,000 participants from around the globe.
